Rakuten pays cash back for shopping through its portal, app or browser extension. Its refer-a-friend bonus is one of the largest in the cashback category, but it is a rotating promotion rather than a fixed rate, and the payout timeline surprises people.

Rakuten's referral bonus is not a fixed number, which is the source of most confusion around it. It rotates: roughly $30 has been the standard rate, $40 has appeared around holidays, and the current elevated offer is $50 to both sides, running through 30 September 2026 after several extensions. Your referred friend receives whatever bonus was available on the day they signed up, so two people comparing notes can both be right.

The qualifying rule is neat once you see it: the spend requirement always matches the bonus. A $50 bonus requires $50 of qualifying purchases; when the bonus was $30, the requirement was $30. Those purchases must total the threshold within 90 days of your friend signing up, made through Rakuten's site, app or browser extension.

Eligibility is narrow in one respect and generous in another. Both of you must reside and be located in the 50 United States or the District of Columbia — some current terms also extend to Canada. Only people who have never been Rakuten members count, so a lapsed account disqualifies them. But there is no cap at all on how many people you refer or how much you earn in total.

Now the part that catches everyone: the timing. Cash Back confirmation generally takes three to fourteen weeks, because Rakuten waits out the return and exchange window before treating a purchase as final. The referral bonus can take up to sixty days after the qualifying purchase, and it is then added to your next Cash Back payment, which Rakuten pays on a quarterly cycle. The realistic gap between referring someone and having the money is months, not days. Your referral list shows each person as Pending until they purchase, Earned once confirmed, and Expired if they never completed a qualifying purchase in time.

One last thing worth knowing if you have optimised your account: even if you have switched your earning preference to American Express Membership Rewards or Bilt points, the new-member signup bonus is generally still paid out as cash rather than points.
