Leesa pays $75 per referral, the only cash-denominated reward in this batch. The reason this page exists is a disclosure that a mattress review site published at launch and later took down.

Leesa sells foam and hybrid mattresses direct to consumer with a home trial, and is known for a social-impact donation programme. Its referral pays $75 in cash — worth noting because the other four brands in this batch pay in Amazon gift cards, and cash is straightforwardly better: spendable anywhere, worth its face value, and not costing the issuer less than it appears to give.

The substantive reason to read this page, though, is about how you would research a mattress at all.

When Mattress Advisor launched in 2017, the site carried a disclosure noting that One Better Ventures held a significant stake in both Mattress Advisor and Leesa. That is exactly the sort of disclosure a review site should make: a shared investor between a reviewer and a reviewed brand is a material connection, and stating it lets the reader weigh the review accordingly. That disclosure was later removed from the site.

The removal is the point. A disclosure that appears and then disappears is worse than one that never existed, because a reader arriving later has no way to know the connection was ever there — and no way to know what else has been taken down. The information did not stop being true when the sentence was deleted.

This sits inside a broader pattern in the mattress category that is worth understanding once and then applying everywhere:

The review sites are consolidated. Pillar4 Media — legally Mattress Advisor LLC — owns Sleepopolis, Mattress Advisor, Mattress Nerd and Mattress Clarity. Reading four "independent" reviews across those sites is reading one company four times.

Brands have financed reviewers. In 2017, after Casper had sued three review sites, Casper financed by way of a loan the acquisition of Sleepopolis by JAKK Media. Sleepopolis' assessment of Casper subsequently improved. That sequence is documented and it is the reason scepticism in this category is warranted rather than cynical.

The rules have since tightened. The FTC's 2024 Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule requires clear and conspicuous disclosure of material connections and makes deceptive review practices punishable by up to $51,744 per violation. That figure indicates how seriously the problem is now treated — and the fact that a rule was needed indicates how widespread it had become.

So the practical advice for buying a mattress online: assume every review site has a commercial relationship until it demonstrates otherwise, look for a current and specific disclosure rather than a generic affiliate notice, and weight the return policy above every review you read. The trial period is the only part of a mattress purchase that protects you if the recommendation was wrong, and it is the part nobody is paid to talk about.
