Airbnb's referral programme is the most famous in the history of referral marketing, and almost everything written about it describes a version that no longer exists.

Airbnb's referral programme is the canonical case study in referral marketing — the one every growth team cites. It is also the reason almost every page about it is wrong, because the version being described was discontinued years ago.

Airbnb ended the original guest referral programme in 2021, and in the same year closed the Airbnb Associates affiliate programme as well. For a period there was no public referral route at all.

A new guest referral programme launched in 2025, and the terms are materially tighter than the old one in three specific ways.

It is limited to eight countries. If you are not in one of them, there is no programme to join regardless of what any listing says — and this alone makes most of the figures circulating irrelevant to most readers.

It caps you at ten successful referrals per year. The original was effectively open-ended, which is precisely how it produced the growth numbers it is famous for. A ten-a-year ceiling turns it from a growth engine into a modest perk.

And travel credits now expire after one year. Under the old programme they persisted indefinitely, so people accumulated them against a future trip. Now an unused credit lapses, which matters because accommodation credit is exactly the kind of reward people hold for a holiday they have not booked yet.

Taken together, those three changes explain why Airbnb's referral stopped being a topic anyone discusses. The programme that generated the case studies was uncapped, permanent and global. The current one is none of those things.

Before you rely on a figure from any listing, check whether your country is among the eight and note the date your credit is issued. Both are more consequential than the amount.
