The mechanics are conventional for the category. Your friend signs up through your code, makes a booking, and the discount attaches to a booking on your side. As with every travel app, expect the reward to be tied to a completed transaction rather than a registration, and expect a minimum fare for the discount to apply — check the current terms in the app, since these move.

What is worth understanding about the whole category is that the tickets are not the differentiator. Indian train ticketing runs through IRCTC, so every booking app — Trainman, ConfirmTkt, ixigo, Paytm and the rest — sells from the same inventory with the same availability. Convenience fees vary between booking apps for an identical ticket, so a ₹100 discount can be partly or wholly offset by a higher booking fee — compare the total, not the discount.
